Nominated Charity 2017
Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials is delighted to announce a 2017 partnership with Headway Oxfordshire. Read on to find out more from the Headway team...
Headway Oxfordshire is an independent local charity that provides specialist information, advice and support to anyone in the county affected by an acquired brain injury (ABI), including stroke, traumatic brain injury and a range of neurological conditions. There are around 4000 hospital admissions in Oxfordshire each year due to ABI and we are the only organisation in the county that provides long-term community-based support to those affected. We support around 450 people per year, as well as family members and carers.
At Headway Oxfordshire, we believe in the premise that life should be experienced to the fullest. Activities that involve risk are a fundamental part of what makes life exciting and worthwhile. As such, we are fully supportive of people’s choices to make informed decisions around their chosen sport or activity. It is for this reason that we are absolutely thrilled to be the nominated charity at the 2017 Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials. We see the partnership between Headway Oxfordshire and the Blenheim Horse Trials as a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of equestrian safety, to highlight the vital work that we do and to raise much-needed funds to sustain this work.
If you are reading this, we ask you to take a moment to consider your brain. We might take our brains for granted but our brains are what define us; they are what make us unique. A brain injury is often utterly life changing – not just for the individual but for those who love and support them. Headway Oxfordshire helps each person adjust and cope with the profound changes and challenges in their lives. We strive to promote rehabilitation and independence, improve quality of life and maximise potential.
We do this through a range of services designed around the identified needs of those affected. Our hub is our Activity and Rehabilitation Centre in Oxford. The centre offers a range of neuro therapies, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy as well as complimentary therapies such as yoga, art and music. We have a highly specialist neuro physiotherapy suite, a specially adapted kitchen and café area and are presently fundraising to complete our sensory garden and virtual reality games room.
We provide services in the community, in-reaching into hospitals at the onset of injury and supporting people back into their homes and communities. We run satellite groups and a one-to-one personal assistant service to help people with daily living. Our projects have been nominated for many awards including a Howard League Award (for our work with young offenders) and a Big Lottery Award (for our community outreach project).
Unfortunately, cases of brain injury continue to rise nationally and locally. 2018 will see us entering our 30th year and it is crucial that we can continue to evolve and flourish. If you would like to help us to help others, please support our work in any way you can. Come and say hello at the Blenheim Horse Trials, we look forward to seeing you there!
